sunday morning>

what a night. the torch has been passed from july to august in healthy monsoon fashion, with nearly 3" (7.6cm) of rain falling between 8pm and 6am. will have more detailed precipitation info later this morning. currently the rain has stopped, and it's a cool 16C/61F with cloudy skies.

a very messy pattern is indicated on the satellite pics. although there is a total lack dynamic forcing in the upper atmosphere (the winds aloft are nearly calm), there is no lack of deep tropical moisture at the surface into the mid-levels of the atmosphere. that moisture surges up against the front ranges of the himalayas in periodic waves...is forced upward, and condensed out in the form of rain. the computer models go haywire trying to time each individual wave, and are actually very little help during the mid-monsoon season. but suffice to say... there is no indication that any significant dry air will be available to cut off these rounds of (occasionally heavy) rain and thundershowers from occurring regularly throughout the coming 5 days. welcome to august!
