the new reality... (pm.07.jul.12)>

It is totally cloudy and foggy across the area this evening, with some moderate to heavy showers around.  Other than a couple of hours during the mid-afternoon when the sun made some brief attempts to break through, it has been a very gray and wet day.  The heaviest rain occurred between 10:45am and about 12:30pm, delivering the majority of the 1.08" (2.7cm) of rain since this morning's report.  The 24 hour total has been 1.52" (3.9cm).  I'll post updated amounts later tonight, since showers are currently in progress.

*Update @ 7:35pm... My rainfall since 7:00am is now 1.33" (3.4cm).  The total amount since 5:00pm Friday evening has reached 1.77" (4.5cm).

Copious moisture remains in the lower and mid-levels of the atmosphere, while a weak northwesterly flow dominates aloft.  As that low-level moisture gets pulled northward along the front ranges of the mountains, it rises and condenses, then encounters the opposite-direction flow in the higher levels, which pushes the shower and thundershower action right back on top of us.  That's been the combination of factors we've been dealing with since last evening -- pretty typical for the first stages of the monsoon season.

There will be only minor fluctuations in our overall atmospheric pattern over the course of the next several days, but it is likely we'll get a few extended breaks in between periods of rainfall -- and perhaps some sunshine from time to time -- in order to regroup for the next round of rain.  Although Monday and Tuesday look like they could be "off days" for significant rainfall in northern India, our mountain micro-climate factors will keep the potential for heavy downpours in the forecast at any time...
