get prepared... (pm.15.jan.13)>

Update @ 8:28pm... Clouds, fog, and 43.2F (6.2C) -- the new low temp of the day.

--------------------------------------------------
Tuesday's stats:

Low temp: 43.2 (6.2C) -- just after 8pm
High temp: 52.2F (11.2C) -- around noon
Rainfall: none

It's cloudy with some light fog around the area this evening... and it has become noticeably colder since the late afternoon.  We did get enough sunshine today to boost temps into that slightly above normal range we've grown accustomed to lately, but I think the time has come for us to say goodbye to the relatively mild conditions of the past several days.

The updated data that has been coming out today is just adding layer upon layer of confirmation that we are in for some very intense winter weather conditions here in the hills and mountains of north India during the coming few days.  A very strong and deep area of low pressure is just now forming to our west over Afghanistan, as a tightly packed upper-level circulation moves across northern Iran.  There is already a lot of low-level moisture across northwest India, and even more will be drawn into the mix as this system strengthens during the next 48 hours.  Simultaneously, progressively colder air is spilling southward from central Asia into the western Himalayas.

What all this means is that we have a nearly perfect recipe for an epic mid-winter storm.  I'm seeing computer model guidance suggesting 8-11cm (3-4"+) of liquid precipitation between late Wednesday and very early on Saturday morning, which is almost too much to believe.  That amount of water translates into snowfall amounts in excess of 3 feet for areas above us that are cold enough to skip the rain stage altogether.  I'll go out on a limb and say that if things evolve according to plan, it will be easy for us to pick up at least several inches of snow here in the immediate McLeod Ganj area -- especially from late Thursday onward.  Thunder and lightning along with some periods of high winds could occur as well.

This looks to be a storm with potentially massive impact on our area... whether or not you plan to be traveling, please keep on top of the latest weather developments.
