rain threat alive... (pm.10.sep.13)>

Tuesday's stats:

Low temp: 60.6F (15.9C)
High temp: 69.1F (20.6C)
Rainfall: 0.18" (5mm)

Unless more rain showers develop before midnight, today will go down in the books as the second-driest day of this month.  Although there were some showers between about noon and 2:30pm, there was only a very brief spell of heavier rain for about 10-15 minutes right around 2:00pm.  Otherwise, we've had a good amount of sunshine off-and-on today, and humidity which dipped into the 65-70% range for a few hours this morning.  As sunset approaches this evening, we have a mix of clouds, fog and peeks of sun.

The weather story over the course of the coming week will involve another period of potentially wetter weather between tomorrow and Friday, followed by a drying trend over the weekend.  A minor surge of remaining tropical moisture will fuel some significant downpours of rain during the next 48-72 hours -- bringing us ever-closer to 100 inches for the 2013 monsoon season.  Of course there will be some sunshine mixed in as well, but be prepared for some locally heavy rainfall during the next two to three days.  Then, it still looks like a significant push of drier air will sweep across the western Himalayas starting on Saturday, lasting into early next week.  This will probably not be enough to kill monsoon conditions for good, but it will definitely be a step in the right direction.

According to historical averages, we're now exactly one week from the "normal" end of monsoon season in our area.  But as I've said many times, here along the front slopes of the mountains we can be besieged with lingering moisture that can keep us dealing with periods of fog and showers for a week or two after things have cleared out further downhill.  Since no two years are exactly alike, let's see how it all unfolds...
