Our Saturday morning is dawning with partly cloudy skies -- the cloud fragments are leftovers from overnight thundershowers scattered across parts of western Kashmir. It was a dry and quiet night here with no rainfall, and a low temperature of 67.6F (19.8C).
The nature and character of the atmosphere across much of the Indian subcontinent is looking more and more tropical and monsoon-like, and there will probably be some major advances of the leading edge of official monsoon conditions during the coming four or five days. We'll have to wait longer, though, as the deep and juicy moisture won't reach us for at least another week to ten days. That doesn't mean it won't rain here -- we're still dealing with the daily cycle of instability, allowing areas of showers and thunderstorms to develop in the vicinity of the mountains during the afternoon hours, with some of that activity potentially surviving into the overnight hours as well. I've recorded exactly 3 inches ( 7.6cm) of rain for the month of June so far, which is almost exactly normal/average for this stage of the month.
Our weekend will feature more of this alternation between sunshine and clouds, with a good chance of at least some isolated thundershower development -- primarily during the PM hours. It's pleasant summertime weather for the most part, just be prepared for the sudden appearance of showers, thunder and gusty winds. There could be some stabilization between roughly Tuesday and Friday of next week, but I don't think the thunder risk will completely disappear.
Temps have been topping out in the 82-89F (28-32C) range for the past week, and should remain in that neighborhood during the next week or so as well.
